上島鳳山 Ueshima Hozan (1875-1920)
Born in Okayama. Studied under Kimura Kanzan, Nishiyama Kanei and Watanabe Shoeki. He often painted figures, flowers, birds and animals of the Maruyama school. Together with Kitano Tsunetomi, Okamoto Taiko and others, he was one of the leading painters of the Osaka art world.

Trained under Kimura Kanzan, Nishiyama Kanei, and Watanabe Shōeki, Hōzan became one of the central figures of the Osaka art world, known for his Maruyama‑school sensitivity to animals and natural settings. Here, the interplay of ink tones gives the bamboo a gentle sway, while the rounded form of the animal adds warmth to the otherwise cool, nocturnal scene.
