前田玉英 Maeda Gyokuei
One of the leading female painters of the Kyoto art world in the Meiji era. She entered the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and studied Nanshu-ga. Later switched to the Shijo School and after graduation studied under Mochizuki Gyokusen. She became a teacher at the Kyoto Prefectural First Higher Girls' School and opened a private school on the side. One of the female painters from Kyoto who exhibited at the Paris Expo.

The pale moon is brushed in a soft, diffused circle that seems to sit within a lightly humid air, the surrounding washes shifting gently between warm and cool tones without a hard edge, giving the scene a quiet suspension that suits Maeda Gyokuei’s measured Shijō‑school handling; the minimal strokes near the lower left remain firm enough to anchor the composition, and the scroll bears the signature ‘Gyokuei’ with the seal ‘Gyokuei jo,’ while the piece is accompanied by its original box, and as the work is viewed over time the subtle changes in density around the moon tend to draw attention back to the faint transitions in the wash, creating a continuity that feels natural and unforced.
